Strontium Stannate

By the addition of potassium stannate to a solution of a strontium salt, or of strontium hydroxide, small transparent rhombohedra are obtained of composition 3SrO.2SnO2.10H2O. The compound is insoluble in water, but soluble in cold hydrochloric or nitric acid, forming a clear solution which gelatinises on heating.

Chlorostannates, SrSnCl6.8H2O, 5H2O, and 4H2O, a bromostannate, SrSnBr6.6H2O, and a thiostannate, SrSnS3.12H2O, have also been described.
