Strontium Applications

Metallic Strontium is not used extensively, mainly for copper and bronze desoxydation. Strontium-90 is used as β-decay source in atomic power sources. Strontium is also used in production of fluorescence dyes and photocells. The primary use for strontium compounds is in glass for colour television catode ray tubes. Volatile strontium salts impart a crimson color to flames, and these salts are used in pyrotechnics. Strontianite refines high-quality steels from sulphur and phosphorus. Strontium carbonate is used in nonvolatile getters as well as in weatherproof glazes and porcelain enamels, doped in steels and heatproof alloys. Chromate SrCrO₄ is a very stable colour is used as rust- and corrosion-resistant pigment in paints, varnishes and oil colors. Strontium titanate is a ferroelectric material, it is used in piezoceramics. Strontium aliphatic acid salts ("strontium soaps") are used in axle-grease production.
